Keeping pets
healthy and in their homes!
WHAT IS AniMeals?
AniMeals is a program that delivers up to seven individual servings once a week for a dog or cat in the home of a Meals on Wheels participant. Only Meals on Wheels participants are eligible for this service.
WHO PROVIDES THIS SERVICE?
The Buffalo Companion Animal Network in partnership with three area Meals on Wheels programs: Amherst , Kenmore-Tonawanda, and Buffalo and Erie County (MOWWNY).
WHAT IS THE GOAL OF AniMeals?
The AniMeals program seeks to keep those pets healthy and in their homes, thus their human companions will also thrive.
Those members of our society who are isolated know intimately that their animals offer affection, stem loneliness and provide a sense of caring and being needed. The value of the human-animal bond to improve the quality of life for individuals who lack social support cannot be overstated.
Research studies by a UB Researcher, Dr. Karen Allen (see References below) show that companion animals lower blood pressure and pulse rate and reduce stress. The Humane Society of Canada has submitted a report, "Silver Paws: The Role of Pets in Reducing Human Health Care Costs" (pdf format), to the
Commission on the Future of Health Care in Canada, and is recommending a tax credit for the elderly who have pets. Another article published on the Humane Society of Canada web site is entitled "Helping Elderly and Their Pets Can Reduce Health Care Costs."
The pet food delivered in the AniMeals program is one of the highest quality pet food brands produced today. Eagle Pack uses only human-grade ingredients in producing their product. We believe pets who eat Eagle Pack will live longer lives and have fewer medical problems.
Mohandas Gandhi pointed out most eloquently that "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." The ability to care for and be companion to an animal should not be limited to the affluent. With so many pets needing homes, AniMeals is just one small effort to keep animals in their homes.
